Each Way Betting Explained: Win, Place and the Maths
Quick Summary
- An each-way bet is two equal bets: one to win and one to place.
- The place part pays a fraction of the win odds, such as a quarter or a fifth.
- Each way doubles your total stake, so a ৳100 each-way bet costs ৳200.

Each-way betting comes from horse racing but turns up wherever there are many runners and an outright winner: golf, tournament outrights and top run-scorer markets among them. It lets you back a longer-priced selection and still collect something if it finishes near the top without winning. The catch is that it is really two bets, and the second one pays at reduced odds. This post explains how each-way bets are built, works through every outcome in Taka, and shows when the structure helps.
How an each-way bet is built
An each-way bet splits into a win bet and a place bet of equal size. A "৳100 each way" bet is ৳100 to win plus ৳100 to place, a total stake of ৳200. The win part pays at the full odds if your selection wins. The place part pays if your selection finishes within the stated places, at a fraction of the win odds.
The place terms are set by the sportsbook for each market, for example "1/4 odds, top 3" or "1/5 odds, top 5". To work out the place odds in decimal, take the win odds, subtract 1, multiply by the fraction, then add 1. At 11.00 with 1/4 terms, that is (10 × 0.25) + 1 = 3.50.
Three outcomes, worked through
Take a hypothetical ৳100 each-way bet at 11.00 with 1/4 odds for the top three places, so ৳200 staked in total. There are three possible results.
| Result | Win part | Place part | Total return | Profit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Selection wins | ৳100 × 11.00 = ৳1,100 | ৳100 × 3.50 = ৳350 | ৳1,450 | +৳1,250 |
| Finishes 2nd or 3rd | Loses | ৳350 | ৳350 | +৳150 |
| Finishes outside top 3 | Loses | Loses | ৳0 | −৳200 |
When each way helps, and when it does not
Each way is most useful on longer prices with generous place terms. At 11.00 with 1/4 terms, a placed finish still shows a profit, as the table shows. On a short-priced selection the place part becomes weak. At 3.00 with 1/4 terms, the place odds are only 1.50, so a placed finish returns ৳150 on a ৳200 total stake, a loss of ৳50 overall. In that case you are paying extra stake mainly to lose less.
Place terms matter as much as price. More places paid means more chances to collect, but the fraction may be smaller. "1/5 odds, top 5" in a large field can be better value than "1/4 odds, top 3", depending on how the field is spread. Comparing the terms of different markets is time well spent.
Dead heats and other rules
When two selections tie for the last paid place, sportsbooks usually apply dead-heat rules: the stake on that part is divided by the number tied, and each portion is paid at the relevant odds. In a hypothetical tie for third between two players, your ৳100 place stake would be treated as ৳50 at 3.50, returning ৳175 rather than ৳350. Rules also cover non-runners and withdrawals. Check the market terms before betting.
Each-way is also not the same as backing "top 3" in a separate market. A top-3 market is a single bet with its own price; each way is a combination of win and place. Sometimes one is better value than the other.
Each way and PJOK
We could not confirm whether PJOK's sportsbook offers each-way terms, or on which markets. If it does, the bet slip will show an each-way option and the place terms. Outright cricket markets, such as top run-scorer in a tournament, are a natural place to look. Our T20 World Cup guide explains outright markets, and the odds guide covers price conversion. As always, a ৳100 each-way bet is ৳200 of your budget.
Three steps
How to place an each-way bet in 3 steps
- 1Read the place terms
Check the fraction and number of places for the market on the PJOK bet slip, if each way is offered.
- 2Work out the place odds
Subtract 1 from the win odds, multiply by the fraction, add 1, and see if a placed finish shows a profit.
- 3Count the double stake
Remember the total stake is twice the each-way amount, and keep it within your unit size.
