Gambling Cost Per Hour: What an Hour of Play Costs

Quick Summary

  • Expected cost per hour = stake per round × rounds per hour × house edge.
  • Pace matters as much as edge: fast games can cost more even with a lower edge.
  • Results swing around the average, so budget for the bad end, not the middle.

Most people know a casino game has a house edge, but few translate it into what really matters: Taka per hour. An edge of 2% sounds tiny until it is multiplied by the number of bets you make in an hour. This post gives the one formula that turns any game into an hourly cost, compares common game types with illustrative numbers, and explains why the average is only half the picture. It is the most practical calculation in this blog, and it takes about a minute.

The formula

Expected cost per hour = stake per round × rounds per hour × house edge. Each part matters. Stake per round is what you put on each spin, hand or bet. Rounds per hour depends on the game's pace and on you: auto-play and fast tables raise it. House edge is the long-run share of stakes the game keeps, which is 100% minus the RTP for slots.

Suppose, hypothetically, you bet ৳20 a hand at a table that deals 60 hands an hour with a 1% edge. The cost is ৳20 × 60 × 0.01 = ৳12 an hour on average. Raise the pace to 120 hands and it is ৳24. Raise the stake to ৳100 and it is ৳60 at the original pace. Same game, very different bills.

Comparing game types

The table uses round, illustrative figures for pace and edge. Real games vary, so check each game's info screen for its RTP and notice your own pace. The point is the comparison, not the exact numbers.

Blackjack, basic strategy৳100600.5%About ৳30
Roulette, single zero৳100402.7%About ৳108
Slot at 96% RTP৳206004%About ৳480
Dragon Tiger, main bet৳1001203.7%About ৳444

Why pace beats edge

The slot row is the eye-opener. A ৳20 stake looks modest next to ৳100 at a table, but at around ten spins a minute the slot puts ৳12,000 through in an hour, and the hourly cost is several times the baccarat figure. Dragon Tiger, with quick rounds and a tie rule, lands in a similar place. Meanwhile blackjack, with a low edge and a moderate pace, is the cheapest per hour in the table if you play the basic decisions well.

This is why choosing a game for its "odds" alone can mislead. A slightly worse edge at a slow pace can cost less per hour than a better edge at high speed. If you want your budget to last, slowing down is often more effective than switching games. Our low-stakes post covers the stake side of the same idea.

The average is not the outcome

Expected cost is an average over many hours. In a single hour, results swing widely around it, especially on slots and other high-volatility games. A ৳480 expected cost might show up as a ৳1,500 win one evening and a ৳2,000 loss the next. Budget for the bad end, not the average. A practical approach is to set your session budget at several times the expected hourly cost and to stop when it is gone, however the hour is going.

Converting the formula into a time limit is equally useful. If your budget for the evening is ৳500 and the expected cost is ৳120 an hour, you might plan for an hour or two, knowing a bad run could end things sooner. Our unit betting post explains how to set stakes from a budget.

Using the formula on PJOK

Open the game's info or help screen in the PJOK lobby to find its RTP or payout rules, estimate your pace (count rounds for five minutes and multiply by 12), and run the formula. Sportsbook bets work the same way: stake times bets per hour times the bookmaker's margin. The dealer bust post and baccarat probability post explain where the table game edges come from, and the responsible gaming page explains time and deposit limits.

Three steps

How to work out your cost per hour in 3 steps

  1. 1
    Find the edge

Open the game's info screen on PJOK and convert RTP to house edge (100% minus RTP).

  2. 2
    Count your pace

Count rounds in five minutes and multiply by 12 to estimate rounds per hour.

  3. 3
    Multiply and budget

Multiply stake × rounds × edge, then set a session budget several times that figure.

Questions and answers

How do I calculate the cost of gambling per hour?

Multiply your stake per round by the number of rounds per hour and by the house edge. For example, ৳20 × 60 rounds × 1% is ৳12 an hour on average. Actual results will vary around that figure.

Why do slots often cost more per hour than table games?

Mainly because of pace. Slots can run hundreds of spins an hour, so even a small stake puts a lot of money through the game. Combined with a typical edge, that adds up to a higher hourly cost.

How do I find a game's house edge?

For slots, subtract the RTP shown in the game's info screen from 100%. For table games, the edge follows from the rules and payouts, which are listed in the table's info panel.

Does the formula tell me what I will lose?

No. It gives the long-run average cost. Any single session can finish well above or below it. That is why budgets should allow for a bad run, not just the average.

How can I reduce my cost per hour?

Lower your stake, slow your pace or turn off auto-play, and prefer games with lower edges. Slowing down is often the most effective change, because it reduces the total amount staked.

Every bet has a cost. Budget it like any other spend, never borrow to play, and stop when it stops being fun. Responsible gaming
